Unexpected Gifts: A Memorable Winter Meal Journey (3)

Why would I create such a dangerous experience for myself?

Finally, I left the skiing resort.

On the fourth day of my trip, I headed to the second hotel by taxi. It was 3 p.m. when I got out of the taxi.

The location was similar to the hotel I had stayed in. Both were covered by a heavy layer of snow, despite it felt more “barren” here. There was a skiing resort next to the hotel, but nearly all the restaurants were closed at this time.

My only option was a Korean-style eatery standing next to the road. I was extremely hungry. When I entered the restaurant, a middle-aged lady walked out from the back and said something in Japanese.

I couldn’t understand Japanese, so I used Google Translate to inform her that I wanted to order some food. Seeing the words on the screen, she answered in English,

“Omakase? Do you want Omakase?”

“Yes,” I said.

Then she began making the dishes for me.

I can’t believe that I can finish all dishes alone.

I couldn’t believe that I finished all the dishes by myself. I knew I was in trouble the moment she laid the dishes out on the table. The portions were much larger than I expected.

Obviously, they were not OMAKASE! 🤣

“How am I going to finish all of this?” I wondered.

As it turned out, I had underestimated my body. My hunger and the urge to resist the cold in the air had already cost me too much energy. In the end, I successfully cleared every plate without difficulty. It seems I had to triple my calorie consumption to survive in such a low-temperature environment. 🥶

Before I left the restaurant, the lady suddenly handed me a tangerine. She said it was free. That tangerine made me wonder if it was a gift from an unknown power, since it is a symbol of auspiciousness in Chinese culture. 🤣

And my later experiences proved that my assumption was true.

That night, I tried the meal provided by the host. The curry rice was delicious, and the fruit they offered balanced the richness of the sauce. What a refreshing combination in winter!

Later that evening, I was planning where to go the next day, and I decided on Ishiuchi Shrine.

To be continued…
